So enhanced is this new model compared to its predecessor (the Ultegra XTB), that we are mind blown Shimano can offer this long cast surf reel for the price they have been able to achieve. Some of the biggest standouts for us when we first saw this reel was that it has X-Protect which is a water repellent system that helps avoid saltwater penetration into the key functioning areas of the reel. This is a massive plus for all you beach anglers out there that are more likely than not, to cop a bit of a splash at some point in time when out fishing in the surf.

The new Shimano Ultegra XTC Reel also has a Ci4+ carbon body which is highly durable and super lightweight for its class. It has Hagane gearing technology, these gears are the best in the market, they are cold forged making them ultra-strong and continue to perform in peak condition for much longer compared to machine cut gearing. Combined with X-Ship gearing technology you have a reel that will produce powerful winding performance, perfect for targeting the likes of mulloway, salmon, tailor, beach sharks and all your other regular surf fishing species.

Another thing to note about the Shimano Ultegra XTC Reel is that it utilizes Shimano’s G-Free body design which basically moves the reels centre of gravity closer in line with the rod translating to better alignment of the rod and reel thus resulting in better casting performance and less line slap.

There are two sizes to choose from when ordering the first is the large beast the Shimano Ultegra 14000XTC Reel. This is the best reel for bigger line capacities or heavier line class. Then there is the smaller size which we call more of a mid-sized reel being the Ultegra 5500XTC Reel for lighter applications.

Shimano Ultegra XTC Reel Buyer’s Guide

As mentioned above there is one of two sizes to choose from when ordering. The smaller model which we class more of a medium physical sized reel being the 5500XTC Reel and the 14000XTC fishing reel which we call a large to extra-large sized reel in a physical sense.

Shimano Ultegra 14000XTC Reel (Large/XL Physical Size)

Our largest long cast fishing reel is designed for a large line capacity or its ability to fish very heavy lines. For example, you can fit around 360 metres of 65lb power pro braid on this reel. This model is ideal for surf fishing targeting species like mulloway, salmon, tailor, beach shark and a whole range of other usual species that reside in surf side gutters. We recommend matching the Ultegra 14000XTC reel up to a 12ft plus sized beach rod with a line rating above 6kg.

Shimano Ultegra 5500XTC Reel (Medium Physical Size)

Is a versatile size. Perfect for the surf caster on a 10-12ft+ rod targeting mulloway, salmon, tailor, whiting, dart and a host of other surf species, but also a great size for casting lures or baits from rock platforms on a 9-10ft rod. We recommend picking a rod that has a line rating of 5kg+
